The College bar is one of the few in Cambridge that is fully student-staffed. Covering two floors, the bar is a large space with plenty of seating. During the day, the bar is a relaxed space, offering an alternative workspace from the library and a space to socialise in.
Situated between Orchard Court and Pearl House, the JCR is the undergraduate common room, and is an ideal space for socialising with friends.
The MCR is the postgraduate common room and is situated in Canning and Eliza – the postgraduate accommodation block. It is open to all postgraduate students at all times, and is a light and spacious area with plenty of comfy seating. There is also a TV and kitchen in the MCR.
The multi-faith spiritual room is in Paula Browne House, just off the main walkway. You can book up to one-hour slots on the Room Management System. There is a lavatory and hand-held shower (for ablutions) next door to the room. It is a shoe-free zone with space for you to leave your shoes just inside the door.
The space is welcome for any and all to use, whether for prayer or quiet reflection.
The Coach House
As well as having an amazing art collection, we also have a space for students to create their own art. Whether it's painting, sketching or drama rehearsals, the Coach House is an adaptable space suitable for many purposes.
We have a fully equipped gym on site with cardio machines (treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes, stepmaster, rowing machine), weight machines, and an area for free weights, yoga and boxing.
The gym is open every day from 06:00 to 23:00. Gym membership fees are £18 per Term or £45 per year.
Tennis and squash courts
We are lucky enough to have tennis and squash courts on site, both of which are free for students to use.
Music practice facilities
We have a range of spaces available in College for music practice. There is a dedicated music room with one electric and one upright piano. There is also a Steinway grand piano available in the Fellows' Drawing Room, which can be booked by students who have achieved Grade 8 in piano.
There are laundry rooms with washing machines, tumble dryers and ironing boards in Canning & Eliza House, Buckingham House, and in the basement of Pearl House. These are operated by a card that can be bought in the laundry and charged up as needed.
Murray Edwards benefits from plenty of outdoor space and a fantastic gardening team. With the exception of the Fellows' Garden, all outdoor space is accessible to students at all times.
Unlike most Colleges in Cambridge, we actively encourage students to walk on the grass and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The lawns are a great place to revise or have a picnic in summer. They also make an excellent location for the Murray Edwards Garden Party, one of the most popular May Week events in Cambridge. The Garden Party isn't the only event to take place in the gardens – every autumn, we celebrate Apple Day, which is a great way of bringing the College community together at the beginning of the academic year. The event includes music, apple juice, apple crumble and toasted marshmallows, and is extremely popular with students, staff and Fellows. In the summer, the beach comes to College and is a popular place to revise while catching some rays.
