The American Feminist Art Movement & its Impact on Contemporary Art
Join us for in-conversation event between Professor Judith K. Brodsky and Dr. Ferris Olin chaired by Marjorie W. Martay at Murray Edwards College.
One of the more recent additions to The Women’s Art Collection is Femfolio, a portfolio of prints created in 2006 by 20 pioneering US feminist artists. The artists were commissioned by Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ) partners: the Brodsky Center which published the works on paper and the Institute for Women in the Arts (IWA). Simultaneously, Brodsky and Olin organized an exhibition, titled “How American Women Artists Invented Postmodernism,” as the inaugural event for the international collaborative they founded, The Feminist Art Project (TFAP).
This illustrated talk will address the innovations of artists in the Femfolio portfolio including Mary Beth Edelson, Miriam Schapiro, Carolee Schneemann, Joyce Kozloff, Joan Semmel, and Faith Ringgold. It will also explore how feminist visual arts initiatives within established institutions contributed to the transformation of contemporary art to include women-identifying artists, gender non-conforming artists, and artists from the African and Asian diasporas.
Speaker Biographies
Professor Judith K. Brodsky, Distinguished Professor Emerita, Visual Arts Department and Founding Director, Brodsky Center, Rutgers University (originally the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, renamed in Brodsky’s honor (2006) and now located at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Brodsky published the Rivington Place portfolio with artists Chris Ofili, Sonia Boyce, Hew Locke, and Isaac Julien along with Glenn Ligon and Carrie Mae Weems which helped to fund Rivington Place to house InIVA (the Institute for International Visual Arts) during Gilane Tawadros’s directorship, and Autograph, directed by Mark Sealy (OBE). Many prints published by the Brodsky Center are in the Victoria and Albert Museum print collection.
Dr. Ferris Olin, Distinguished Professor Emerita, and Founding Co-Director (with Judith Brodsky), Institute for Women in the Arts, Rutgers University. Olin’s recent projects include publication (also with Brodsky) of the first book analyzing women leaders in the arts (Junctures in Women’s Leadership: The Arts, Rutgers University Press). She was the curator for The Brodsky Center at Rutgers: Three Decades, a large-scale exhibition at the Zimmerli Art Museum documenting the 400 artists who had been in residence during the Center’s years at Rutgers including El Anatsui, Mickalene Thomas, Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Byron Kim, Richard Tuttle, and other major contemporary artists.
Marjorie W. Martay, Co – Executive Director of City Limits , Art W.org and Women We Create. Martay is a champion of the arts and seasoned business professional located in New York City. She was the founder and executive director of Art W .org , an organization committed to promoting women artists by means of advocacy, curation, and education. She also launched Women We Create, experimental journeys that showcased notable women artists across a variety of disciplines. She is currently co – executive of City Limits – a legacy of local NYC housing news.
